Departments are Charged for Background Checks
The base cost of a background check for departments is $20.25.*
The actual cost may be higher due to additional charges for other services, such as ordering an education report, court fees**, state required notifications, etc. Larger units should take this into consideration when formulating their budgets. In addition to the above, note the policy pertaining to Indiana University Programs that Involve Children.
For detailed information on procedures for conducting Criminal Background Checks and access to the vendor website on the Bloomington Campus please refer to the Background Check process link. Additional information regarding criminal background checks and the Form I-9/E-Verify process can be found on the IU HR website.
*The mandatory background check is required for all new hires and former employees who are rehired after a break in service if their last IU background check was completed over a year ago. Please see the Indiana University Human Resources Background Check policy above. The policy covers background checks to verify prior employment, relevant education and licenses, and criminal, sex, and violent offender history (registry checks), all required.
**Court Fees - Some county governments in the United States charge a fee to access their court records. No Indiana counties charge fees. Nationally, charges vary and go as high as $95 in some New York counties.
Foreign nationals who have not lived in the United States for over a year are not required to have a criminal background check.
